UPDATED: Now with a working app file.
So back in the day when I first got my HTC Hero, voice search was available to download from the market, an app direct from HTC. For some reason, it was removed and has never been seen since. Amongst other things, this app added a new icon to the Quick Search Bar (the bar that appears when you press search from the home screen, or on the HTC search widget). The new icon was a microphone, and clicking on it allowed to speak your search, rather than type it, and damn was it accurate!
Noticing that people new to HTC devices will not have this app, I thought it might be a good idea to post it up here, with some simple instructions on how to install it. So here goes.
Download the VoiceSearch app for your HTC Desire/HTC Legend.
Download the VoiceSearch app for your HTC Hero.
Click on the file in your downloads and select ‘Open App Manager’ followed by ‘install’
If you have completed the install STOP HERE if you can’t find the downloads section in your Desire browser carry on reading.
Download the app called ‘Astro file manager’ from the market.
Open Astro and browse to the location of the file you just downloaded.
Click on this file (named VoiceSearch_2.1.apk [DESIRE] or VoiceSearch_1.5.apk [HERO]) and select ‘Open App Manager’, followed by ‘install’.
And that’s it, now go to your main screen and press the search button, hopefully, you will now see the mic!
As always drop me any questions, take care!
